Why seniors want to move home in Calgary

With almost all of our Canadian senior living communities based here in Calgary Alberta, it’s always interesting to see new information on our city’s senior population. The City of Calgary have devoted a whole section of their website to the latest information on Calgary’s senior population. So we decided to take a little look…

The City of Calgary Population Profiles

This substantial document gives a fascinating snapshot on Calgary’s diverse senior population, who make up 10% of the City’s population.

Of the 1,195,194 seniors living in Calgary:

  • 25% are widowed

  • 25% live alone

  • 83% own their own home

  • 9% live in “collective dwellings”

That’s a lot of seniors living on their own in homes that are probably too big for them, and a constant worry in terms of running costs, utilities, maintenance and general upkeep.

Could you just fix…

As any person with older parents know, visits to their parents’ inevitably involves a long list of “could you just fix this…”.  Our Residents love the fact that, without the worry of home ownership, they can spend quality time enjoying an outing, a meal or just a chat, and not having to ask the family to do chores, repairs or maintenance all the time.

Why seniors move from their homes

Our experiences are backed up by the findings of a survey by the The City of Calgary into why seniors move from their homes. The top three reasons for those who had already moved in previous last year at the time of the survey were:

  • There were fewer people living in the home (children had moved out)

  • They wanted a smaller home

  • The senior, or another family member, suffered from ill health

The top three reasons for those wanting to move out were:

  • The high costs associated with living in their home eroding their savings

  • Housework, cleaning and maintenance becoming too much to cope with

  • Wanting a smaller place to live

No more chores

At The Manor Villages in Calgary, our team take care of all the issues that Residents didn’t enjoy about living in their own homes - cleaning and housekeeping, building maintenance, upkeep of the grounds, keeping a vehicle taxed and on the road, and the winter-long chore of snow clearance. They also enjoy being looked after!

  • Our chefs create tasty, well balanced nutritious meals that Residents can enjoy with friends, and never have to do the washing up afterwards.

  • The Health and Wellness team ensure that all Residents have a plan to keep them active for longer, including on-site exercise classes that they never would have attended if they had been in their own homes.

  • Our Activities team create a packed program of events at each Manor Village community, as well as regular outings, cultural visits and lunch dates.

Best of all, our Residents’ families can relax, safe in the knowledge that their parents and relatives are well looked after and enjoying life to the fullest.
